| | Carburetor cleaners traditionally have been blends of a ketone; an inexpensive hydrocarbon fluid such as kerosene, toluene, or xylene; and a small quantity of water-soluble alcohol or glycol ether. Some marketers have converted to 25% acetone, VOC exempt, to achieve the current CARB/EPA VOC limit of 75%. A more economical choice for future regulations may be to also include a less expensive LVP Fluid. When used in combination with Aromatic 100 Fluid rather than toluene or xylene, the cost can be stabilized further by eliminating the frequent swings in toluene and xylene pricing. An added advantage in using Aromatic 100 Fluid to replace toluene or xylene is to minimize compounds that the EPA has classified as Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP). The following formula meets the 2003 CARB VOC limit of 45 wt.% for carburetor or fuel-injection air intake cleaners.
